I still say the HP, but perhaps because I'm biased with good experience. Mine's an HP. I think I said that already. And wtf, 10.8 lbs? Have fun carrying that around campus.

Also, I thought price was an issue. O.o

My parents seem to be easing up on helping with the price, I think I might be able to go up to around $1500.

Right now I am between the HP Pavilion dv2800t Artist Edition series and the HP Pavilion dv9700t series . My head hurts. >_<

What if I decide to get a 24k gold Mac notebook? =D

I don't see why buying from the manufacturer is so bad. I can't seem to find the specifications that I want anyways, so customizing doesn't seem so bad.. although I'm not completely sure how I should customize it for college. I'll set up configs for each one..

Here's the basics I've got customized right now for the dv2800t:

  • Genuine Windows Vista Ultimate with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
  • Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T8300 (2.40GHz)
  • 3GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
  • 128MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS
  • 250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
  • High Capacity 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

...and for the dv9700t:

  • Genuine Windows Vista Ultimate with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
  • Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T8300 (2.40GHz)
  • 17.0" diagonal WSXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1680 x 1050)
  • 3GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
  • 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS
  • 240GB 7200RPM SATA Dual Hard Drive (120GB x 2)
  • High Capacity 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

Anything too much/unnecessary?

First off, when I wrote that I confused Darkness with Dragonman. Sorry 'bout that grnwink.gif

Technically... I don't need a computer either but I like playing games, and apparently Darkness does too. I personally like all these programs I have that don't exist on a mac.

Far as I know, most recent computer games have been compatible with Mac's..

They may be, but you know... this $800 machine I'm building here (soon, hopefully) will outdo any mac.

Seriously, AVG, zonealarm, spybot. Free virus protection. Also, use firefox and keep the "Noscript" plugin handy. If you still manage to get serious viruses with that, you're probably a moron. and if you pay for virus protection (NOD32), it's still cheaper than a mac.

They may have virus protection, but this completely eliminates any threat of ever getting a virus. They also don't malfunction every other day like PC's. Yours might be an exception, but just about everyone I know has had serious hardware or software failings with PC multiple times. Mac's require almost 0 maintenance throughout their lifetime.

Have you ever touched a PC? Mine hasn't crashed in... hell, I dunno. A month at least? The "crash" from before was just where I decided, on a whim, to reformat my computer.
My mother's old 500MHz P3 system, running the same OS as me hasn't crashed in a week. It only crashes because the hardware can't take XP.

As hardware failings go, that's what you get for buying a cheap retail desktop, using cheap parts, or doing something retarded to your PC.
And as far as "software failures" go... wat? You can't say someone had a software failure and PCs suck when someone is ignorant enoughto manually download a virus. In fact, I've NEVER seen a case where a PC had a "software error" because of anything other than user error.

So, basically... you're saying macs are just as good as PCs, but are much more expensive.
I don't get it... Is that the punchline?

I meant that the Mac laptops perform just as well as desktop computers. Not necessarily PC's. But yeah, that pretty much is the punchline. Not many laptops out there can say even close to as much. These things can run circles around the competition, and many of the features are really convenient. As I said before- once you get the controls down, you're set.

Dude, why in the HELL would anyone want to waste their money on a mac? I'm going to spend twice as much on a mac just to say I have a f-ing mac with the same power as it's retail PC equivalent? Are you so rich as to not care about dropping an extra grand on a computer just so you can have the electronics world's equivalent of a designer product? Oh, and guess what? PCs can do the same things that macs can. See what I did there? I took your statement and reversed it. It still means the same thing, but it sounds alot worse doesn't it?
Macbook Pro with slightly more power than my personal laptop (it's GPU is better, and the processor has an extra 400MHz). $2,149.00
My laptop. $900
ASUS laptop with the same class of hardware as the mac. $1100-$1000
PC desktop with the same performance as the mac laptop (custom built buy a guy who makes PCs). Roughly $600... maybe cheaper.

The damned beast that I'm building soon. You don't get a whole lot faster than that. Would only cost me $800. $900 if I buy a copy of windows. If I were to build you this thing I'd probably charge you maybe... $1200.
Now, give me two. Just two good reasons to buy a mac.
Don't worry, I'll wait.

Dragonman, that toshiba you linked looked nice as did the HPs. but they look a bit expensive. Take a look around newegg and see what you find.
Try zipzoomfly, tigerdirect, and clubIT while you're at it.

I just started settling with the HPs, and then I found this Toshiba on newegg: http://www.newegg.co...N82E16834114496

Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit
Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 2.26G
15.4" WXGA
4GB DDR2
320GB HD 5400rpm
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470
256MB Video Memory

I am stuck again.

This computer has never crashed, I keep it clean and get rid of anything I don't need/am not using. grnwink.gif

MACs are not better then PC as far as "performance" goes, all systems rely on someone knowing what they are doing. You could have the best computer in the world, but if you don't know how to take care of it .. it's screwed. bluetongue.gif

Draggy, if price isn't an issue, then don't take my advice. Buy from the manufacturer. You'll get the best warranty possible from the manufacturer and you can get exactly what you want through customization.

Haha troll and jake, I'm not turning this into a debate over Mac and PC. If you want to start a separate topic on that and argue with yourself, be my guest.

I was recommending the Mac after using PC's for years and using the Mac recently in a photojournalism class. Chill with all the hostility, I was only trying to give Dragon some insight from my experience.

I'm not going to give you two reasons for anything; that would only succeed in wasting even more of my time. I'm happy that you're happy with your PC.

Dragon, how much gaming space are you talking about needing? If this is for mostly school you can probably cut the price significantly.
