Bang.
I think the rarity value plays a part in it. The fact that perfect diamonds are so hard to find. Or those that are just large.
Also, possibly because they are the hardest substance known to man?
Such a heavy burden now to be "The One".
Born to bear and read to all the details of our ending
To write it down for all the world to see.

The diamond market is a luxury controlled market. Very interesting marketing tactics behind it, I think I studied a good case study in some business strategy class. Check out this link and all the pages that follow: http://science.howst...om/diamond6.htm
If you want more detail you may want to search "case study De beers diamonds" or something like that.

there was someone a while back who wanted people on this forum to say something so that he could quote them in his paper. again, quoting people from a forum whose primary focus is gaming? i only thought that dragonman meant the same thing by his request.
by the way, there's an interesting trend with rare materials. silver and gold are the only metals that don't rust. if you factor in acid rain, gold is the only metal that doesn't rust.
now, with diamond, it's widely known that it's the hardest naturally occurring substance.
it seems as if nature knew which of its metals/gems were valuable and gave them properties of corresponding value.

Steel is my body and fire is my blood.
I have created over thousand blades.
Unaware of loss, Nor aware of gain.
Withstood pain to create many weapons,
Waiting for one's arrival.
I have no regrets, this is the only path.
My whole life was 'Unlimited Blade Works"

Yeah, I saw something like that where a guy from ABC would should people on the street a cubic zirconia and a $10,000 diamond, and ask which they would prefer. About half picked the cubic zirconia, but when he told them which is which, they would always say they'd want the diamond. All because of the influence of the market, it's pretty amazing. I see references everywhere saying that if people boycotted the whole thing, the diamond market would crach, but the countries' economy would be negatively affected also.
