I'm gonna be straight about this, lol. I'll keep the metaphors on the low, no sad attempts at poetics, no "road ahead", and nothing else of the sort that always ends up in my posts of this type. None. Nada. Zippo. So if you want lofty words, just PM me. bluetongue.gif

That's because if I do it will be a novel. grnwink.gif

(well, a longer novel)

And you don't want that. bandit.gif crazy.gif

**********************************************

So the following is what needs to be done to get back on track. Nothing chancy here, since 2001 certain things always seemed to pick the place up in different situations. This post will have nothing but these which are applicable now and a brief statement about leadership.

Events And Promotion

This is going to kill three birds with one stone (forgive me Butch! screama.gif ). Keeping the place active and fun, reinforcing the "clan" aspects of SeeD, as well as expanding our member base.

It will keep the place active and fun as was witnessed by many last night (was waiting for something like that to post this, actually, so it could be visible). Some think, "What? Events, what is the point?" An "event" is any SeeD get-together. It is not exclusive to parties, PKing, or anything else. Even meetings - which will soon be back - are considered "events". Without events we're not a clan, we're just a community. This goes for RS as well as every faction, the factions may as well not exist in the game if they don't do anything together there.

As a parallel, events reinforce the "clan" aspects of SeeD. Events are what make a clan a clan, for they are our only true existence within a game. Not much else to say here, I think you get the idea. grnwink.gif

As for expanding our member base... Events can bring back interest from old members as well as bring in new members. This, too, could be seen last night. Our event last night was conducted in a manner which creates a definite presence from the player's perspective. Our only real methods of recruitment, of our first 70-or-so members, was through events and word-of-mouth. Never underestimate these means for they form a clan's base and, as you can see, get a clan such as SeeD going. deal.gif

---------------------------------------------

Err, Promotion As Itself bluetongue.gif

Now other methods of recruitment are open to us which were not open before. This obviously doesn't mean not to have events, but it means that we can do some serious online promotion while conducting the clan-making events.

- On-Site Promotion: This is the promotion you do every day without realizing it. You are a SeeD or CurvedSpace person, and when a new member pops in you are the one who he/she will be watching. Complaining and causing trouble (obviously not liking the place and maybe making a spectacle)? The member will leave. Treating others fairly and whatnot? The member is more likely to stay. This in itself isn't a problem now (with the exception of the shoutbox, lol). However, the current friendliness can be taken another step forward.

The Newcomer Board is the most important place for promotion within the entire community. Don't be afraid to reply and welcome new members! At the same time, if you really want to make them feel welcome, drop them a welcome PM! One PM can really make a person feel welcome. In the absense of the infamous manually-updated member list this kind of attention is required for the same level of "welcomeness". Suave_anim.gif

- Promotion Elsewhere: This is the direct form of promotion which most would usually think of as "promotion". Posts on other communities, links in signatures, submissions to toplists (please post the toplists in the Site Promotion Archive so we can back it), word-of-mouth, and everything else. This is the quickest way to gain members, and contrary to what many think... Anyone can do it. "Skill" only comes in trying. Think of it this way... There's nothing to lose for trying to promote our community on another site that allows it. Chances are, though, that you will generate interest even if lacking the substance you think is required. The biggest thing is getting our name out there, and anyone can do that. It is easy and does not take much time, especially if you're already a member of such a site.

The entire clan, your clan, would benefit greatly from the few minutes it takes to mention SeeD somewhere.

---------------------------------------------

Factions:

I'll keep this short and simple. The above can apply to every faction. If you would like members to join your faction I would highly recommend the consideration of the above. ShiftyEyes_anim.gif

---------------------------------------------

The Community:

After undermining the community's importance, lol... I will say that it is indeed, contrary to what you've been thinking for the past three minutes, quite important. bluetongue.gif

Just as a clan cannot exist without events, a clan cannot exist without a community. Events are a clan's blood, community is the clan's body and mind. A clan without a community will not last, at least if it has a member base larger than 15 members. A community is a perpetual meeting place, a representation of the clan out-of-game, a place for the planning of events and whatnot, and a place to encompass the clan's organization. It is essential for SeeD with regards to Runescape, and it is even more essential for factions to exist.

So make it your community! Give the place the "SeeD flavor" instead of the "matter-of-fact discussion board" flavor. Make the place unique with your own ideas and personality. Don't be afraid to post new threads, get to know some members, and generally have fun with the place. While there's nothing wrong with "lurking" and just reading everything, it won't contribute much to the community.

Just keep all that in mind.

**********************************************

My Statements About Current Leadership:

As you probably know, some shifts have happened with regards to leadership and even administration. I will just explain a couple of the most important changes:

- New Admins (MoS and Star): They are now administrators here as well as Rylkan and me if you did not know. This means that they, too, are able and willing to help with anything that previously only Rylkan or I could do... Which is tough when flooded with requests (hence a reason for more admins in the first place). They can change names, create forums (including faction forums), ban, unban, fix board issues in the community administrative domain, add emoticons, and many other things. If you would like administrative help with anything, don't be afraid to ask them as well. grnwink.gif

On the same note, they can also conduct the community on an administrative level. This means that when they say something needs to stop (or happen, hehe), they have a basis for it and should not be undermined. If you feel that something is unjust (as with everyone including myself), make it known, but don't treat what they say as not likely to come to pass... And they are capable of banning IPs.

- New Runescape Faction Leaders (MoS and OM): With regards to Runescape, Masterstuff has taken a position similar to my previous position and Original Maxi has taken that of Rylkan. With the factions my attention had to obviously be diverted from one game, which is why the change happened. They are now in charge of all Runescape-specific happenings and organization. This means that for any RS-related SeeD queries, I would recommend contacting them instead of me.

**********************************************

... And with that I will close with a no greater conclusion. bluetongue.gif Just as I began, no "road ahead" or excessive metaphors or whatnot. We're SeeD, nothing more, nothing less. What we are is up to you and not up to mere words. I can say all I want, but when it comes down to it you really determine who we are.

So with that, I will close by saying for you to contribute to the conclusion you would most prefer. If "We're going to become known for PKing!" is your conclusion, then it is mine as well. If "Events... Must... Have... Events..." is yours, then by all means let's have events! If "Whatevah, just want the community" is your idea of SeeD, then let's go forward with that in mind. However... If "LeT's TaKe OvEr Zee WORLD" is yours... Keep it inside until the next applicable "future" post. ShiftyEyes_anim.gif

This would be your personal conclusion, and yours to enact. Not asking for it to be posted as an alternate conclusion or anything, lol, but just keep it inside yourself and try to bring it about if you think it will improve SeeD. SeeD is a clan based on its members, and your view is essential for its success.

I agree with you on welcoming all the new members....If we welcomed all members the same way that we welcomed Traver back I'm sure that a lot more new members would feel at home with the clan.

Great "mini-novelette", Cspace. bluetongue.gif It's quite true, with everything you said. Especially about the Newcomer Board. I encourage everyone to include it in any "forum scans" that are performed daily, weekly, etc. I myself am going to add it to the "high-priority" routine.

If you're still confused about events just look at my pinned thread in the Event Forum ("Not Planning on Hosting An Event?") to see what's up with that. At this point in SeeD you can host an event on the same day you post it (like that Cspace guy) as long as it's reasonable (reasonable meaning that it not something that requires organization/sign-ups/whatever). So if you just feel like having a get-to-gether or somethin', you can give a shout-out in the Event Forum and you're sure to get a bunch on RS with you. This place is active in means of how many people are visiting it each day. So a lot of people on each day equals events whenever you want. biggrinbandit.gif

Actually this is quite easy! In the mood to have a party or go PKing or something today? Make a post and see how many come... You may be pleasantly surprised.

For those who complain about PKing particularly and the lack thereof, this is an easy fix. When you're in the mood just invite others, it really isn't rocket science.

Last-minute attendance really is not bad at all in many circumstances... That is, unless you're like me and schedule something past midnight. biglaugh.gif

BTW, prepare, for the next shall be at three in the morning. deal.gif

You have a life?!
You're not one of us, we must banish you to the real world! screama.gif

Joking aside, good post Cspace. TheSmile.gif I see quite a few people complaining about a lack of something, usually activity or their activity of choice (for instance pking).

Be the change you want to see in the world (or in this case the clan icon_sweatdrop.gif ).

If you want events, host them! If you want pking, lead it! If you want more people posting on the boards, give them more to post about! That's the best way to improve SeeD, by example. And I am sure you'll gain the respect and friendship of many in the process.

This all looks like to me a sort of "lightening up" with rules and trying to make this more of a community that's easy going and fun. bigcheek.gif

And my note to everyone again about events: If you're able to get on your computer a couple times a week or get on for a pretty long time usually, please just host an event. It can be as simple as "Mining Party To Raise Exp Without Getting Bored!" bluetongue.gif It doesn't really require organization anymore, we really want to get together more in RS or another game so that this community becomes more "friendly" (as in you're comfortable in here and can look forward to an event).

If we got to the point where there's events going on most of the time, that would be awesome! We'd get even more traffic and new members if SeeDs could expect and event(s) when they visited the forums and look forward to scheduling one themself. whiteside.gif

Exactly! Though I'm not gonna even try to repeat what you just said grnwink.gif
I think SeeD is starting to go in a great direction, and I hope more people will really give some input on what they want more of. Although I think we can all agree events are one of the main attractions in SeeD. biglaugh.gif
