Due to a few reasons, the purpose of the shoutbox has changed. With it being open to all members, some would naturally use it as an attention grabber. It is not necessarily wrong of the member, after all it is a 'shout'box, but it is a little bit too much for its placement along with some of the abilities it provides. It's too easy to dominate the page and this is a problem when trying to attract new members, and for those who don't read everything it is not really all that obvious as being a shoutbox.

Therefore it is changing form and accomodating another need. The moderators should be capable of getting some sort of visible notice out to the portal when pertaining to events, the chat, contests, or whatever else. Therefore I have altered the shoutbox and now it's a place for such moderator notices. Anyone with the 'Moderator' tag or above may post there. I'll ask that they use the box responsibly though, and by all means should not abuse emoticons.

This doesn't mean that the shoutbox as we know it is gone for good though. I plan to implement a shoutbox on the forums in the future where any registered member may shout to the board index of both the docked and undocked forums. I cannot absolutely guarantee it though, and I don't know when it will happen, but it is something I hope to set up when time permits and all other priorities are settled.

Just thought I'd explain what happened and why. For anyone who did not see it, the link to the list of shouts (now 'notices') has moved to the Stuff Column and is no longer on the top navbar.

Yeah, but it doesn't take much to see why it was necessary.


And with any luck the purpose of the revamped shoutbox will be a useful one, allowing moderators to announce something to a fair few people when it's not necessary enough for one of those proper 'announcement' things.

why dont you make that second shoutbox like the last one we had (but a bit better ) and put it in a little box,in the right colum above or below the google ads.

Yea, that's where it would probably go if we did get one, as many forums already do that and it seems to work great.
