A few friends of mine and myself tried that on our own with three different liter bottles: Coke, Mug root beer, and one other that I forgot
. The one that I forgot was the highest, and Mug was second. We dropped about 10-13 Mentos into each bottle. For the Coke, we tried to put the Mentos in and then attempt to screw the cap on, thinking that the bottle would explode from the pressure. The guy who tried to screw the cap on didn't do it fast enough, so the fountain spewed all over him
.
After all of it, I made some observations to find out why and how it all works. It seems that the outer coating of the Mentos reacts with the Carbon bubbles in the soft drink, causing all the Carbonated water to shoot out like if you shook it up. To support this theory, I observed that the Mentos' outer coverings were dissolved, and the remaining liquid was totally flat.
