Is Atlantis real? Does a lost city exist. sunken beneath the waves never to be found agian? I have always wondered about the truth of Atlantis. It is a fascinating subject that has captivated many for centuries. It was said that even Christopher Columbus deviated a bit from his course to go searching for Atlantis on his fateful journey to the Americas. In this topic, we will explore the myth and lore that is Atlantis.

In order to best examine this legend, we must start at its origins. In two of Plato's dialogues on ideal societies, Atlantis makes an appearance. You can find a full transcription of these dialogues, Timaeus and Critias, here.

Here is an important passage from Timaeus that specifically makes reference to the great Atlantis:

QUOTE
Now in this island of Atlantis there was a great and wonderful empire which had rule over the whole island and several others, and over parts of the continent, and, furthermore, the men of Atlantis had subjected the parts of Libya within the columns of Heracles as far as Egypt, and of Europe as far as Tyrrhenia. This vast power, gathered into one, endeavoured to subdue at a blow our country and yours and the whole of the region within the straits; and then, Solon, your country shone forth, in the excellence of her virtue and strength, among all mankind. She was pre-eminent in courage and military skill, and was the leader of the Hellenes. And when the rest fell off from her, being compelled to stand alone, after having undergone the very extremity of danger, she defeated and triumphed over the invaders, and preserved from slavery those who were not yet subjugated, and generously liberated all the rest of us who dwell within the pillars.

This is all I'll give for now, as I'm kinda sick of reading. Feel free to post anything on the subject.

Anyway, I have recently heard a wonderful new theory about what atlantis may have been. Some speculate that Atlantis used to be an entire continent off the coast of mexico. What is left of this continent is now mostly islands (Cuba, DR, Haiti, PR, etc.), brought about by an ice age or an incredible seismic misfortune. I'll look further into this theory and see if I can't find a theoretical map of this. This theory seems plausible, and I like it a lot.

I think that Atlantis exists... or existed, at least. It's not that far-fetched, really. We've found cities under the sea before, so why not a nation?
As far as where it is, people have suggested it was about everywhere. The Bermuda Triangle, the Gulf of Mexico, the Mediterranean, Troy ("I thought Atlantis went underwater." I did, too.), the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, and the Pacific Ocean.

I always have thought the nation of Atlantis was really the island of Minos. At one time, the Minos lived on an island in the Mediterranean back when the Greek were still very primitive. They were quite advanced compared to everyone around them. Some think they spread out and ruled the area around the island. They had many new inventions, especially weapons. The Minos capital and original home actually did go underwater, but why isn't really known.

*Revives*

I saw this one thing on the Discovery channel or something... Some guy theorized that there wasn't always a Mediteranean sea. He believed that the straights of gibralter used to be whole, and that the entire sea used to be dray land dotted with lakes and rivers. Then one day, the straights broke and the waters of the atlantic rushed in (Noah's great flood?). The guy proposing this theory has also spotted a likely location of Atlantis, an underwater ridge. I'll post a link to more info if I can find one.

I just read another thing about Atlantis being in Indonesia. It was quite convincing...

On a side note, the Ocean was over 100 meters shallower mere thousands of years ago (most of it was ice).

I heard it was actually some Mediterranean island, which got ripped apart by a huge volcanic explosion. Although, it might actually be just a story. -.-

That story is actually true. Such an island does exist, however, it does not fit the description of Atlantis. The island you are referring to is Santorini (SP?).

Sorry, but to me, thats just a tad bit absurd, no offense. But in Noah's great flood, it RAINED not water-rushes-in for 40 days and 40 nights. Apparently this was the first time in the history of the world that it rained, but that comes from a not-too-reliable source.

Anyway, i also saw something on TV around a year ago that suggests that atlantis was off the coast of Japan or one of its nearby islands. A dive team who had been working in this one area for years had discovered strangely squared off rock formations, as they explored it they found an area in the rock formations they called "the stage". The stage seemed to be shaped as if a very large cube were cut out of the rock, and I think they said something about finding a throne-shaped rock in its corner. When they swam about 20 feet away from "the stage" they saw that there seemed to be giant carvings of 2D heads with a goodly amount of feathers on them on the walls. and indeed, I saw them too, before they outlined it.

that program was rather convincing, but I still think that atlantis is somewhere in the Atlantic.
