Makes sense to me. Sorta. It's more likely to be they don't want people to adopt them for one day then abandon them or bring them back, kinda like how people are with rabbits at easter. That said, someone did that (not "sacrifice" them I'm sure, just being [word]s) to our four kittens on halloween one year, left them in our yard for us to find in the morning.
