Well, in my honest opinion, giving teachers guns would promote nothing but violence, and you never know, there could be a teacher that might get sick of that class clown and decide to shoot him instead of give him dention, the world is so messed up that is possible to happen even here.
As for students, some counties in Texas have had training sessions for students where they actually surround the the 'intruder' and close in on him, leaving them wide open to being shot in the stomach, I recently used to live in the same town as HyperFried, Ferret Overlord, and Asyluman(wherever he is) and from what I can recall the highschool there had a security guard who stands around in the main entrance, I'm not sure if this is still the case being that I moved away from there before I made it to highschool.
In the town I live in now in upstate New York, we have several 'School Resource Officers' who arrest the students who have done wrong, or they deal with them accordingly, currently we have two that patrol the hallway, always armed with their handguns in their holster, and every lunch period one walks around the tables and watches us, theres really no limit to what schools can do nowadays.

Yeah, well as you can see, not many people have access to guns here. Especially handguns. Everyone, I think even the police, go to jail for a long time for possessing one.

Well, one thing about arming teachers could be that they have it in their bag or something, then leave the room to say, copy a paper, and some kid can steal the gun.

People have been trying to arm teachers since Columbine, possibly earlier. That's the soapbox, so to speak. People say if teachers had guns locked in their room, the Columbine shooting wouldn't have happened. (Don't ask me to explain the logic, I can't)
Since then, if there is a school shooting, someone pops and says "Teachers with guns would have stopped the shooting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Oh, and suggest spending federal money to stop the Goth subculture, but that's beside the point. Anyway, it seems that 3 shootings every year in hundreds of schools over a span of 180 days is enough to count as a major threat. No one seems to note that having weapons in an area will probably cause violence in itself.
As usual, I blame the mass media. They try to forcibly blast this stuff into you for weeks while normal days are ignored.

I would trust very few of my high school teachers with guns.
(And I'm fairly sure it was the Daily Show, not the Colbert Report. But meh.)

The other day at my school a child was busted with 7 Automatic pistols and one sawed off shotgun in his locker. He got caught because there was weed residue in the locker. We have dogs. What an idiot.
Anyways. Back to the point. If you give teachers guns, what stops them from shooting the kids? I had a teacher who was as loony as a toon. He's up in what I call Sunnydale for life now. Teacher's are just grown up kids with degrees. They have emotions and feelings. What if a 79 year old Enlgish teacher decided God was telling her to shoot little Matty. What if she did it?
