aha! i did a brief report on this for astronomy class.

it's a message (sent out in binary, i think) that we send out to the outer depths of space via radio, containing information about us. it's more of a ritualistic thing, because apart from the miniscule chance that any form of intelligent life will pick it up, there's no guarantee that they will understand what any of it says.

the information that the message contains include stuff like DNA, rough shape of the human body, information about atoms (hydrogen and/or oxygen, i think), and some other stuff that i can't recall off the top of my head.
